SARA will be hosting a fox hunt on Thursday, May 21st starting at 7pm. This fox hunt will be instead of holding a club business meeting.
Fox hunting is a fun and easy amateur radio contest. All hams of any license class are welcome as is the public – no transmissions are necessary to hunt the fox. This event is open to everyone – not just members. Teams are welcome – you do not have to do this solo. Participants only need an HT with an S meter and a directional antenna to participate such as a yagi, moxon, etc. There are numerous examples of cheap builds online such as the “Tape Measure Beam” or the “DIY 2m Moxon“. Use of other direction-finding equipment such as offset attenuators, “handifinders”, and SDRs are also permitted.
The fox hunt will begin at the Wadsworth Eagles (9953 Rittman Rd, Wadsworth, OH 44281) at 7pm. There will be some brief directions and a hunt overview in the meeting room and then hunters will be dismissed to begin the hunt. This will be a hyper-local hunt with a limited potential radius from the Eagles. Additionally, this is a learning and testing experience so there will be no winner. The goal is simply to find the fox. Participation trophies will be awarded. When you find the fox, you can hang out and socialize or depart.
We will be trying to organize some teams so that people who do not have the equipment to fox hunt can participate. If you have the equipment and are willing to help out, please sign up below. Additionally, if you want to participate but do not have the equipment, sign up below as well. Otherwise, no sign up is required – just show up!
