V.E. Tests

* Please note that Check-In time is 9:30 to better accommodate the Library’s Saturday morning opening schedule*

The Silvercreek Amateur Radio Association (SARA) conducts four scheduled VE exam sessions for the ARRL VEC organization through the calendar year.

Tests will be held in 2017 on:

  • March 4th
  • June 3rd
  • September 2nd
  • December 2nd

All sessions begin check in at 9:30 AM and the testing begins approximately at 10:00 AM. All test elements (2 through 4) are offered at any of the SARA scheduled test sessions listed above. Note testing for element 1 (Morse code) was dropped as a licensing requirement by the FCC effective February 24th, 2007.

The exam sessions are held at the Rittman Public Library in Rittman, Ohio.

The library is located on West Ohio Avenue, just west of the town square. See the maps below. The door to the VE exam room opens at 9:30 AM. Please use the door at the rear of the library.

Walk-ins are accepted, but space is limited, so advance notice is always appreciated. To attend a test session you may register yourself by contacting the SARA VE Team liaison by e-mail, telephone, or postal mail.

When attending test sessions be sure to bring both your original AND a copy of any existing license and any currently valid CSCE certificates you may have.

The FCC and the ARRL VEC require a photo ID for all adult test candidates. A driver’s license or State issued ID card is sufficient for this.

Students without a driver’s license or other form of photo ID, may bring a recent school grade report or similar documentation that identifies the student. A birth certificate, or an envelope addressed to the candidate at the address listed on their FCC 605 form, also serve as sufficient identification.

Calculators may be used for the written exams. However, if you bring a programmable calculator, be sure you can demonstrate to the VE team that the calculator memory is cleared and does not contain stored formulas, or you will not permitted to use it.

The ARRL VEC test fee is currently $15 for all test candidates. This fee is charged regardless if you pass any elements or not. You may take as many of the three test elements at a session as you like and pay just one test fee.

If you fail a test element, and wish to make a second attempt to pass that same element, you must pay the test fee again for the second attempt. Note that due to time constraints the VE team may not always offer a second test opportunity at a given test session.

If you wish to pay the exam fee by check, please make checks payable to S.A.R.A.

VE exam checklist:

1. Original and copy of any current license
2. Original and copy of any current CSCE
3. Photo ID (or other acceptable form of ID as described above)
4. Two #2 pencils for exam answer sheet
5. $15 VEC exam fee

If you have a license currently, please make sure you know your FCC issued Federal Registration Number (referred to as FRN) as it is required on the NVEC 605 form you will fill out when taking your exam. You may find your FRN number by looking up your call sign on one of the several call sign servers on the Internet, including the FCC’s amateur radio service call sign lookup page.

The link below will take you to the FCC amateur radio call sign lookup page.

Special Test Sessions

The VE teams are permitted and encouraged to provide special accommodations to candidates which may have one or more impairments that prevent them from participating in a regular test session. Sight impaired, hearing impaired, home-bound, and similar candidates can often be given a test with provisions customized to their unique requirements. If you have such a special need or have questions about what might be possible to enable you or someone you know with an interest in becoming a licensed amateur operator please contact the person listed above.
