Tuesday Night NET Announcements 01-07-2020

The Ohio ARES Simplex Contest will be held this Saturday, January 11th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. This contest is sponsored by the ARRL Ohio Section and Ohio ARES with the purpose of improving our station and antenna capabilities, and to test our coverage areas on simplex frequencies to better react and serve in the case of emergency. That said, this is a fun no pressure and everyone is encouraged to participate type contest. SARA’s very own John Wagner N8CD and Jason McCormick N8EI will be roving again this year utilizing the experience gained from last year and are expected to be at the top of the leader board. For more information visit the SARA website w8wky.org for a link to the Ohio Simplex Contest website.

Our next Club meeting will be a week from this Thursday on January 16th at Beef O’Brady’s in Wadsworth. Our presenters this month will be Jason McCormick N8EI and John Wagner N8CD who will speak on Repeater Linking and Digital Repeaters followed by Repeater Show & Tell. Jason and John are uniquely qualified to speak on this topic as most of the area repeater linking has been done by them. This promises to be a fine kickoff to our 2020 meetings.

On Friday, January 10th, 2020 at 8:00pm, Jason McCormick N8EI will be running a digital messages net on the W8WKY repeater 147.390 MHz. The mode will be MT63-2K. MT63-2K and is offered in the Fldigi package. Participation in this net is possible with an HT and a computer with a soundcard – no additional equipment needed. MT63 will work having a computer transmit into a mic for transmitting, and the computer mic listening to a radio for receiving. Obviously, using a radio interface like a Signalink box will provide for greater reliability, but it is very workable to use only a bare-bones setup. More information including a link to a good step-through tutorial is available on the www.w8wky.org website.

And finally, SARA is now planning our presentation schedule for 2020 and we are actively seeking speakers and topic recommendations. If you have a Ham Radio passion that you would like to share with the group or an idea for a subject that you would like more information on, please contact either Gary Shorter AA8CS or Jason McCormick N8EI so we can make plans to incorporate your ideas into the 2020 agenda.
